Castello di Velona
C. Italy: Tuscany: Montalcino
Among JDB's most historic properties, this castle - located in Montalcino, home of the world famous Brunello wines - was originally a 10th century fortress and in later years, the private home of wealthy families from nearby Siena (a half hour drive from the castle). Surrounded by the rich Tuscan countryside, it opened to guests after a $16 million renovation spanning four years, during which the castle was transformed (including the 12th century watchtower) into a fully equipped hotel while preserving its original features. Of the 20 accommodations, each one is different, all have fireplaces and expansive views of the Tuscan countryside, and 18 are suites. Each is equipped with mini-bar, satellite television and in-room safe. There is one two-bedroom suite that is perfect for families. A well-trained staff and concierge cater to every need. Throughout the hotel the walls are ecru colored stone with hand-painted trompe l'oeil Greco-Roman borders. Hand-hewn dark oak beams support the ceilings. Amenities include a heated outdoor swimming pool with hydro-massage, a library, a small frescoed chapel, wine cellar and a spectacular private tasting room. Lovers of fine food will be delighted with the restaurant featuring typical Tuscan cuisine served under olive and cypress trees during summer months. In the winter, the castle's restaurant features a massive fireplace with a roaring fire. On the castle grounds are facilities that produce an excellent extra virgin olive oil as well as important wines, including the famous Brunello di Montalcino.
NOTE: No elevator. Not suitable for those with limited mobility. Property is classified as an historical residence, thus it does not have stars.
