Built on the ruins of a Roman castle that dates back to the first century, El Castell de Ciutat is a four-star hotel located in La Seu d'Urgell in northern Spain's Pyrenees mountains. The castle, which was abandoned for years, was purchased by the Tąpies family in 1970. The family meticulously restored the castle and created a modern hotel adjacent to the castle ruins with large glass windows to show off the gorgeous mountain views - this design was inspired by Mr. Tąpies' visits to hotels in America's Colorado state.
The hotel has 38 rooms, all of which have breathtaking views of the mountains or valley. Some of the rooms have slanted wooden beamed ceilings that create a warm and cozy lodge feeling that is perfect for this destination. There is one two-bedroom suite located in the old castle section of the hotel. This suite has a living room with a half bath, chimney, domed ceilings, and a large bathroom with a Jacuzzi tub that is perfect to soak in while enjoying the spectacular views of the surrounding landscape. Also located in the old castle is a large romantic dining room that can be used for group dinners and events. El Castell de Ciutat has an excellent one Michelin star restaurant called Tąpies. Tąpies serves delicious regional cuisine and boasts an extensive list of Spanish and international wines. The hotel's Wellness Club, which was refurbished in 2005, has a spa, gym, Jacuzzi tubs, beauty salon, and two wonderful swimming pools - one inside and one outside - both of which have scenic vistas.
La Seu d'Urgell is approximately two hours northwest of Barcelona, six kilometers south from the Principality of Andorra, and is situated in a great location for trips to Toulouse or Perpignan, France. There are two national parks, several golf courses, and four ski resorts within easy driving distance from the hotel. Activities located on the hotel's premises include hot air balloon and helicopter rides. El Castell de Ciutat is a luxurious mountain retreat that is ideal for guests wishing to experience the tranquility and beauty of northern Catalonia.
