Turning into this property from the road is like entering an oasis. One immediately is aware of the exceptional good taste with which this villa has been converted to a small hotel. Originally a private residence, the Liberty-style villa dates to the 19th century. Furnishings are exquisite because the owner restores antique buildings and has amassed an impressive collection of antiques. The welcoming staff speaks excellent English.
There is obviously an excellent chef because the restaurant is first class in terms of both the menu and the very professional service. They have more than 400 different wines available in their cellar and can organize a wine tasting upon request.
On the lower level of the villa, there is a very attractive spa and fitness center with a large Jacuzzi pool, aromatherapy, chromatherapy showers, sauna, steam bath, even a "leg pool" to increase circulation.
Eleven of the accommodations are in the main building; the remaining ten are located in a separate building near the huge outdoor swimming pool and open-air theater where concerts can be held. Also, in the other building is an outstanding ballroom used for weddings and other celebrations. All rooms have satellite television, DVD, in-room internet, safe, and mini bar. There are five suites and junior suites; the balance are deluxe rooms. There are connecting rooms for families, however, children under 10 are not allowed. Rooms are immaculately clean.
The hotel has 12 bicycles for guests' use. They give them a map and send them off! There is also a shuttle to either Bari or Brindisi airport (for a fee) and a free shuttle to the beach at Savalletri.
Martina Franca is famous for its baroque churches and monuments. A classical music festival is held there in July. The hotel is 10 km from Alberobello and 25 km from Ostuni, making it a good base for exploring Puglia.
The delightful young woman who is in charge of sales at the hotel told a wonderful story about the trulli houses that are unique to this area. In the 13th century, the prince did not want to pay tax on houses for all who lived in his territory. So they stacked the stones in a pyramid with a rope hanging in the middle. When the tax man came, they pulled the rope and the roof fell down. No roof meant no tax! They restacked the stones when the tax man left!
