Villa Marsili
C. Italy: Tuscany: Cortona
This hotel is located in a building dating to the 17th century which has been completely made over to offer all modern comforts. While the hotel is located within one set of walls surrounding Cortona, it is not within what is now considered the historic center of Cortona where the cathedral, shops and galleries are found. But it is within walking distance (uphill) for the physically fit.
The drawing rooms all have fireplaces, making them wonderfully inviting places to relax. Beautiful frescoes adorn the walls. Because of the elevation of the hotel, there are panoramic views of the Valdichiana and Lake Trasimeno. Breakfast-a wonderful buffet with a selection of Tuscan specialties-can be served outdoors in warm weather and during cooler months, the winter garden is the perfect place to enjoy a cup of tea.
Villa Marsili offers its guests a complimentary aperitif in the evening, usually served on the garden terrace because of the wonderful view. And now the hotel has its own restaurant serving typical Tuscan dishes. Rooms are all fully equipped and while there are no connecting rooms, the hotel can accommodate up to three persons in a deluxe room or junior suite. Hotel has a very friendly staff. This is an excellent base for exploring Tuscany and Umbria. And the hotel's young manager is really a dynamo - very engaging and interested in his guests' wellbeing.
NOTE: Hotel is generally closed January and February.
