FLORENCE, Italy - Private Countryside Tours

JDB Tours do not have to be booked in conjunction with a hotel booking, private villa or apartment rental. Most vehicles used for tours or transfers are Mercedes E-class, V-class & 16 seat minibuses. However, JDB Ground retains the right to substitute a different vehicle type if necessary. Tour itineraries are subject to change due to site closings, inclement weather, strikes or other unforeseen circumstances. JDB Ground reserves the right to substitute a venue or site during a tour in the event the scheduled site is not available. In rare instances it may be necessary to reschedule the starting time of the tour; in such situations, clients will be notified in advance.

Entrance fees to museums and exhibits are not included in the rate unless indicated, nor are gratuities for drivers and guides. Unless otherwise indicated in the tour description, tours begin at either 9:00 a.m. or 2:00 p.m. and are available daily. Preference for either morning or afternoon tour must be indicated at the time of booking. The guide will meet clients at their hotel, unless another meeting point is designated in the itinerary. Clients staying in private apartments will be advised of the meeting point in their tour confirmation. Rates are subject to change.

In addition to the tours described below, JDB Ground offers a custom, full day Wine Tasting in Southern Tuscany. This tour is tailored to the client's level of wine knowledge and city of departure. Please contact italyground@jdbhotels.com for additional information.

Siena and San Gimignano
8 Hours
Often described as Tuscany's most beautiful hill town and home of the world's first bank, Siena is most famous today for the great horserace, the Palio, held during July and August each year. Depart your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for Siena, where you will meet your guide and enjoy a two hour tour of the major monuments of this historical city, including the stunning the Piazza del Campo where the Palio is held, the Palazzo Pubblico and Siena’s fascinating Duomo, home to a collection of works by Bernini, Michelangelo and Donatello. Then drive through the Sienese hills to San Gimignano, a 10th century hill town called the "Manhatten" of Tuscany because of the 15 medieval towers that form its skyline. Stop for lunch in one of its local trattorias (additional cost) and then wander the charming cobblestone streets and enjoy the afternoon on your own before returning to your hotel.

Pisa and Lucca Day Trip
8 Hours
Enjoy a drive through the vineyards and olive groves of the Tuscan countryside to the medieval walled hill town of Lucca where you will meet your guide for a private walking tour of this charming town. Founded by the Etruscans, it became a Roman colony in 180 B.C., and traces of its amphitheatre and forum can be seen today. It contains some of Italy's finest medieval and Renaissance architecture, and remarkable are the 16th century walls that ring the city, originally built for defense but today used for walking or biking around the city. There will be time for a stop for lunch (additional cost) before continuing on to Pisa to see this its famous tower and stroll the Piazza del Duomo on your own. Reserved tickets for a 30 minute tour of the Leaning Tower can be requested.

Please indicate at the time of booking if you would like tickets for the Leaning Tower Tour, at € 18 per person. Your credit card will be charged by the Tower's ticket office, Opera della Primaziale Pisana, and tickets are not refundable. Children under 7 years are not allowed on the tour.


The Wines of Tuscany: Brunello
7-8 Hours
Your English speaking driver will pick you up at your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the drive to Montalcino in the province of Siena, where some of the world's most sublime wine is produced. Made exclusively from the Sangiovese grape, it must be aged at least four years before it can be sold. The first stop is at one of the largest wineries in the area and producer of exquisite wines. See its modern production facilities, tour its cellars and enjoy wine tasting in its Enoteca. Then visit a small, family owned and operated winery where all processing is done semi manually. The next stop is the charming town of Montalcino, where you will enjoy a typical lunch in a local trattoria (beverages excluded) and then have free time to explore the town before returning to your hotel.

The Wines of Tuscany: Chianti Classico
7-8 Hours
Your English speaking driver will pick you up at your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the drive through some of Tuscany's most picturesque landscape to the Chianti Classico wine region. The DOCG label around the neck of a wine bottle - pink with a black rooster - certifies that a wine has been grown under stringent rules in the Chianti Classico zone. First stop is at a modern winery for a guided tour to see the production of one of Italy's most sophisticated Chianti Classico wines, followed by wine tasting. Then visit a second winery for a tour and tasting where fine Chianti Classico is produced using traditional, century old methods. The next stop is the charming town of Greve in Chianti, where you will enjoy a typical lunch in a local trattoria (beverages excluded) and then have free time to explore the town before returning to your hotel.

Your English speaking driver will pick you up at your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the drive to the Montepulciano wine region, where the Prugnolo Gentile and other grapes are blended to create the superb wine, Vino Nobile di Montepulciano, considered Italy's best by wine connoisseurs. Montepulciano, a Medieval and Renaissance hill town, is also known for its superb gastronomy. The first stop is at one of the largest wineries in the area and producer of this DOCG wine. See its modern production facilities, tour its cellars and enjoy wine tasting. Then visit a small, family owned and operated traditional winery where all processing is done semi-manually, to learn about and taste their fantastic wines. The next stop is the charming town of Montepulciano, where you will enjoy a typical lunch in a local trattoria (beverages excluded) and then have free time to explore the town before returning to your hotel.

Umbria's Cultural Treasures: Assisi, Perugia & Etruscan Tombs
8-9 Hours
Your English speaking driver will pick you up at your hotel at 9:00 a.m. for the drive to the Palazzone Necropolis, where you will meet your guide for the day at the Hypogeum of the Volumnis, an Etruscan family tomb dating to the 2nd century B.C. and the largest and most completely intact of the almost two hundred known tomb sites in this archaeological park. Then continue to medieval Perugia, for a tour that includes the highlights of this fascinating city: the 13th century Fontana Maggiore, the massive Palazzo dei Priori, and the Collegio di Cambio with its superb Perugino frescoes. After a stop for lunch (additional cost), continue to the hill town of Assisi, to stroll its charming streets and tour its colossal Basilica of St. Francis, dedicated to the 12th century saint and virtually covered in frescoes by such masters as Giotto, Cimabue, Lorenzetti and Martini. Return to your hotel.
