Cordoba
8 Hours
Begin your day with a walking tour of the historic quarter of Cordoba, the former capital of Hispania Ulterior under the Roman Empire and capital of the Moorish kingdom of El-Andalus. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, it was at one time Europe's richest city. Once the home of the Jewish community and therefore called La Judera, it consists of a beautiful network of small streets and squares all arranged around the city's impressive Mezquita, one of the largest mosques in the world. When the city was reconquered by the Christians in 1236 they were so awed by the Mezquita's beauty that they left it standing and built their cathedral in the midst of its rows of arches and columns, creating an extraordinary church-mosque. Modifications took 234 years, so the original Gothic style is combined with Baroque and Renaissance elements. Cordoba's other treasures include El Puente Romano or old Roman bridge, the Alcazar de los Reyes Cristianos, with its remarkable Arabian baths and Roman mosaics and an ancient Jewish synagogue (closed on Mondays), one of the few synagogues existing today in Spain. Enjoy lunch in the flowered courtyard of a typical Andalusian restaurant (additional cost), followed by free time to shop, further explore the old city, or to take a guided tour of the Mezquita - Cathedral (see below). Then enjoy superb mint tea and pastries in a wonderfully hidden Arab tea house (additional cost) before returning to Seville.
